Maleek Berry Breaks Down “Been Calling” on Genius’ Video Series ‘Verified’

“I always try and write the music in a way that anybody could relate to it.”

South London R&B singer Maleek Berry has been producing hits for Nigerian artists like Wizkid and Davido for years, but many fans got their first introduction to him in 2016 with the release of his debut solo EP Last Daze of Summer and its breakout single “Kontrol.” In June 2017, he dropped the self-produced single “Been Calling,” which has since earned over two million Spotify streams. The track came about as part of Berry’s effort to open up more in his music.

“Whenever I write songs, I always want to just dig deep and try and write about something I’ve been through before,” he explains to Genius. “And this was just one of those instances. Naturally, I’m a recluse. I don’t like talking too much.
